He was like this in X-Men...

* * * Spoiler warning * * *

Canada, Lauglin City. A man without a past fights inside a cage for money. No one can beat him. He takes some punches for the show but if kicked in the balls things becomes personal. With fists like steel he takes down another opponent and then casually returns to his drink and cigar, all he seems to care about.

Wolverine! The announcer says his name.

After the fight he finds himself in a bar where he orders a beer. There are no signs of injuries or marks left from the fight on him. The man he beat in the arena comes to him asking for the money he’s lost since it hadn’t been a fair fight. He knows what he is and threatens to tell it to everyone else. That annoys him and he turns around pressing sharp claws that comes out of his fist against the man’s throat. The bartender tries to interfere but he slices his shotgun into pieces with his other pair of claws. Having the situation under control he leaves.

He drives a trailer on empty roads covered in snow. Eventually he stops sensing that something isn’t right and he gets out of the car. In the back he discovers Marie/Rogue, the girl from the bar. He makes her get off, he doesn’t want passengers or anyone’s company, and he leaves with the trailer but he doesn’t have the heart to leave her there alone in the cold in the middle of nowhere. He reluctantly takes her with him.

The girl is hungry so he gives her a tablet of chocolate from the board cabinet. She asks him a lot of questions to which he gives short answers. He doesn’t want to say if he’s been in the army or not but he wears dog tags with the name Wolverine engraved on them. His real name is Logan though. And yes, it hurts every time the claws come out.

Suddenly a huge tree falls in front of the trailer just when Rogue was warning him about wearing a seatbelt. The car spins around and Logan is thrown out and lands in the snow. Only a moment later he gets back up on his feet. He makes his neck pop as his injuries are healing on his face. He sniffs the air. They are not alone.

Sabertooth attacks him jumping out of nowhere. They fight hard, Sabertooth is very strong apparently, and he throws Logan against the windshield leaving him to lay there unconscious. Anyone else in his place would be dead. Cyclops pulls him off the hood of the car just before the trailer explodes. Sabertooth takes his dog tags.

Logan wakes up on the exam table while dr. Jean Gray is giving him a physical. It takes him only seconds to jump up and immobilize her but then he releases her and leaves the lab in a hurry. He walks along the corridor looking for a way out. He sees the suits put on display and he fetches some clothes from a shelf. Dressed he freaks out when he hears a voice calling him. An elevator door opens and he hides inside. It takes him upstairs in what looks like a school sort of. He hides, tries several doors, but the voice finds him everywhere and he ends up in a classroom where Professor Charles Xavier is teaching the physics class.

Some questions get answered. He’s in Westchester, New York. He’s been brought in for medical attention, which he obviously doesn’t need. He’s more worried about Rogue. There is where he officially meets Storm, Cyclops and Jean. Him and Cyclops rub off the wrong way from the very beginning. It’s the first time he hears about Magneto. Xavier’s team suspects Magneto is after Logan for some reason. He also discovers that Xavier might know more about him than he knows himself. It’s been 15 years since he’s been looking for his memories.

The Professor offers his help. He shows Logan around and introduces him to the school for gifted students, the mutants. He makes him a deal, 48 hours to find out why Magneto wants him and in exchange he will help him discover his past. Logan accepts it, he’s got nothing to lose, and they start the tests. A full body scan reveals the fact that his entire skeleton is covered in adamantium, the most resistant metal there is. An experiment with mutants apparently. That plus his innate regenerative powers make him practically indestructible. He does have no recollection of how that happened to him though.

Jeans shows him to his room. He teases her and flirts, as much as he can, and he dares her to read his mind. She sees flashes from the experiment but not enough to make something of it and she doesn’t get to discuss it with him. Cyclops walks in and after she leaves the room he warns him to stay away from his girl.

At night Logan has nightmares. He sees the interior of the facility where the experiment has taken place, people, guns, a tank filled with liquid in which he’s been kept, restrains, people with glasses, the experiment was a success. He grunts and stirs in his sleep. Rogue comes to his room and repeatedly tries to wake him but he’s confused when he does, his claws instinctively come out and stab her.

Shocked he calls out for help but the situation seems to be critical and he let her touch him and draw the strength from him to regenerate before it’s too late. She recovers fully while he falls on the floor in a coma, nearly dead. All this he finds out later when he wakes up weak and dizzy and Xavier tells him what has happened.

Rogue runs away after the incident and Logan is determined to go after her. The Professor uses Cerebro to locate the girl but he doesn’t want Logan to go look for her and sends Storm and Cyclops in return. Of course Logan doesn’t listen, he steals Cyclops’ motorcycle and he’s on his way. He really seems to enjoy riding that bike once the engine is turned on to full speed.

He finds Rogue inside the train. He apologizes for the other night and tries to convince her to follow her instincts and go back to the academy where people genuinely want to help her. He also promises to take care of her.

The train stops abruptly and Magneto makes a big entrance. He wants the girl and not Logan like they have initially thought. Logan is pinned to the back wall of the wagon and can’t stop him from getting Rogue.

That pisses him off. Back at the mansion he wants to go get her back. Being a loner, he doesn’t want to join the team or choose a side for that matter. He questions their methods and politics and argues openly with Cyclops. He only apologizes after Xavier is hurt by a malfunction of Cerebro.

Jean uses Cerebro and finds out where Rogue is held. Another discussion between all of them and they realize what are Magneto’s plans and in which way they involve Rogue. Now he has to join the team if he wants to save her.

He complains about the uniform that is uncomfortable and too tight and he doesn’t like Cyclops way of piloting the jet. It looks like he doesn’t like flying much.

As the team enters the Statue of Liberty the metal detector goes off when Logan passes through it. He shoves his claws into it to quiet it and shows Cyclops the middle claw. There’s someone else there too, he can feel it but he just can’t see it.

Mystique attacks him looking exactly like him. They fight, Logan has a slight advantage since his claws don’t break, and he goes really feral after she kicks him in the groin. He gets rid of her but when Storm approaches him he stabs her in the stomach knowing it is Mystique. He is asked for a proof of who he is when he rejoins the others and he calls Cyclops a dick. That is accepted in unanimity.

All of the sudden he can’t move and everyone is tied with metal bands to the walls by Magneto. Logan has to stab himself with the claws to cut the bands and free himself. He falls to the floor and lays there as if being dead until Sabertooth approaches him. They fight outside on top of Statue of Liberty. Logan comes very close to falling off and stabbing Jean through the wall but he does retrieve his dog tags.

He throws Cyclops his glasses so he can control his eyes and fire without killing them. Knowing he’s got the best chances to stop Magneto and if he fails they can still destroy the machine this one has created, he insists to be the one to go up there. With Storm and Jean’s help he lands on top of the machine. He struggles against Magneto who prevents him from moving. Cyclops fires hitting Magneto and sending him off and Logan blows up the machine. He picks Rogue up in his arms. The girl is once again close to the point of dying so he takes off his glove and touches her face. Big open wounds appear on his face, blood drips, he falls on his back. Dead.

He’s taken care of at the school being laid on a table next to the Professor’s. He wakes up while Jean is checking the disappearing wounds from underneath the bandages. It tickles him. She assures him that Rogue is fine and she informs him that the girl might have a crush on him but he tells her his heart belongs to someone else. He doesn’t let her tell him off and just kisses her hand.

Xavier tells Logan where to go up North and he prepares to leave. Before walking out the door he gives Rogue his dog tags and tells her he’ll be back for them. When he does leave he takes Cyclops’ bike.
